100 years after the First World War, Pete Voelker set out to photograph the eastern border of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The portfolio points to a perpetual front line between the so-called west and east with photographs showing a beautiful and historic borderland that continues to play a major role in geopolitical conflict and is once again under threat of devastation from the rise of nationalism and authoritarian leadership. The integrity of the land and the safety of its inhabitants rely on the unity of Europe and the pursuit of democracy.
